Well, i generally let dd eat her own meals, but if it is a bit messy, i usually feed her with a spoon, and give her a spoon also and she pretends to feed herself, so at the same time she is learning.
Something that may help also, my dd doesnt like the plastic spoons, she likes the normal ones we use(teaspoon) so that has worked great for us. (after we found this uot obviously!)
With ornages, sh eowuld not eat them if i peeled them for her, instead i just cut up in quarters and let her go at it.
She has learnt that the skin isnt nice to eat, and avoids it now!
